A FUNDRAISING event in South Ockendon has resulted in a donation to Basildon Hospital from the family of a much-loved mum and former hospital patient.
The family of Alfreda Lawrence raised and donated £1,117.35 to the Pasteur ward at Basildon Hospital, in recognition of the care their mum received from staff on the Stroke Unit.
Alfreda suffered from a stroke and passed away on the Stroke Unit on Thursday 9 August 2018.
The mum of nine was very close to her family and they described the care she received as ‘amazing’.
Son Tony Lawrence said: “It was a very difficult time for us as a family. She had a stroke on the Sunday and passed away the following Thursday.
“The staff on Pasteur ward supported us every step of the way – the care she got was the unbelievable. As a family, we thought we should give back as it’s what she would have wanted.”
The family fundraised by organising a disco night at The Royal British Legion Club in South Ockendon. The club supported the night by waiving the cost of the hall hire and sending two members of staff to help at the event.
They sold tickets for entry to the disco, auctioned designer items and sold other goods to help raise the funds, food and drink was also available.
Clair Grayston, hospital fundraising officer said: “It’s always wonderful when we receive donations from families who are happy with the care and support they receive from our staff.
“These funds will make a huge difference and enable the ward to purchase equipment that are needed for patients like Alfreda.”
