THE Amazon Fulfilment Centre in Tilbury is among the company’s centres honouring veterans and reservists who have joined their UK operations over the last eight years.
In 2011, Amazon launched its Military Programme in the UK, offering veterans the opportunity to pursue exciting post-military careers.
This year, Amazon has gone a step further by announcing that it will support employees who continue to serve with the UK Military as members of the Armed Forces Reserve by ensuring that they will get up to two weeks of paid leave each year to attend training in addition to their annual leave.
David Preece,32, joined the Amazon Operations team over two years ago as an Area Manager in Tilbury after seven years in the Royal Navy. Last November, David moved roles and is now an HR Business Partner with aspirations to advance his career at Amazon.
Speaking on why he came to work at Amazon, David said: “Amazon is a great business with lots of opportunities. Leaving the Royal Navy can be daunting, but Amazon made it a smooth transition because of the military recruitment pipeline. I was looking for job security, as well a career that enabled me to use the skills I gained in the Royal Navy. This is also why I transitioned into HR. I enjoyed leading people as a Warfare Officer.
“The Navy prepares you for managing people because you take total ownership of your role. I have been interested in this for some time, so I was lucky to switch careers while at Amazon.”
David joined the Royal Navy at age 23 (2010) and was a Warfare Officer on two ships, the HMS Grimsby and HMS Severn, and the Action Officer of the Watch on the HMS Dauntless. He started his Navy career in the Mediterranean and then the UK where he conducted mine clearance.
David then spent six months in the Caribbean doing anti-narcotics and drug interdiction, working closely with the US Coast Guard. On the HMS Dauntless, one of the newest ships in the fleet, he was responsible for the navigation of the ship and safety of those onboard and worked closely with NATO.
Sertac Yilmaz, General Manager at Amazon in Tilbury said: “Fulfilment is at the heart of the Amazon experience. We deliver millions of products to hundreds of countries worldwide. Our teams possess a wide range of skills and expertise, from business analysis and inventory management to engineering. We are thrilled to offer talented veterans the opportunity to launch into exciting post-military careers with limitless possibilities.”
