Hove 20, Thurrock 27
THURROCK T-Birds lifted the RFU Women’s Championship crown in a thrilling final in Stourbridge this afternoon (Sunday, 14 April).
The match ebbed and slowed and the T-Birds had to haul themselves back after conceding a ten point lead to two Hove tries in the opening exchanges.
A try from Sally Tuson got them back in it and Niketa Akintade levelled things at 10-10, only for Hove to cross the try line again.
Tuson brought things level before Thurrock took the lead for the first time through India Harvey, converted by Lizell Heather.
That proved pivotal as Hove showed their resilience with another try to make things 22-20 – but Harvey crossed again in the closing stages and the title was Thurrock’s.
Coach Andy Yarrow said: “This caps off an amazing season of rugby. We lost a number of players at the close of last season & feared this could be a rebuilding season but the players that have joint the club have linked so well with the originals. An amazing team have just achieved incredible things.
“I’d like to thank all the players, management, & supporters who have been like a family this seaaon.
“Today the T-Birds really showed what they stand for heart, passion and belief. There were tough times out there today but that talented group of players pulled together lookong dangerous everytime they got the ball.
“I am a very proud coach today!”
