Promotion quest boosted by Millers’ fine win

Double goalscorer Jason Raad.

Heybridge Swifts 1, Aveley 2

ANY thoughts that Aveley’s quest for promotion from the Bostik North might be derailed by the departure of manager James Webster just days after a play-off place was confirmed have been firmly dismissed.

After last week’s victory at fellow play-off contenders Coggeshall Aveley faced another tough away day, at Heybridge Swifts, who will also be in the end of season shoot-out.

And not only did Millers secure the win that helps their quest for a home play-off tie, they laid down another marker with a strong performance – shaking off the disappointment of going behind.

Emmanuel Osei-Owusu opened the scoring for Swifts after a hard-fought 40 minutes but Aveley showed their resilience by going into the break on level terms thanks to a 45th minute equaliser from Jason Raad.

And Aveley turned up the heat in the second half with a strong performance capped by Raad’s second goal on 75 minutes.
