T-Birds take the title on good weekend for borough club

Thurrock T-Birds' Sally Tuson's tries helped T-Birds confirm the championship crown.

A GOOD weekend for Thurrock Rugby Club was completed on Sunday afternoon when the club’s ladies side, the T-Birds, clunched the Women’s Championship South with a 37-26 win at home against Blackheath.

A try from Sally Tuson opened the scoring for T-Birds but Blackheath hit back and took a two point lead thanks to a penalty try.

However, India Harvey crossed to restore the lead – only for another penalty try to go against the home side.

Tuson’s second put T-Birds ahead again but resilient Blackheath caused some consternation among home supporters by coming back with a converted try of their own to lead 21-15 at half time.

A strong start to the second half and tries from Annalise Allan and Tuson’s hat-trick restored the home advantage and the lead was stretched to 32-21 by a Jennifer Stanhope try and Lizell Heather’s conversion.

Both sides added a try apiece before the close but at the end T-Birds were home and hosed and the celebrations began!

On Saturday the men’s first team returned to winning ways with a gutsy performance to beat Dartfordians 40-21, also at Oakfield.

The seconds also enjoyed a good afternoon, winning 39-0 at East London seconds.
