TWO of the borough’s three non-league sides in action this afternoon (Saturday, 2 February) enjoyed wins that put boosted their hopes of promotion in the Bostik North.
However, while Aveley and Tilbury were celebrating, Grays Athletic succumbed to defeat at the hands of Coggeshall – in the presence of their celebrity part owner Olly Murs, pictured with local BBC reporter Stuart Smith).
Alex Akrofi scored twice as Aveley battled back after conceding a sixth minute goal to hosts Canvey Island at the Frost Financial Stadium.
His equaliser came on 25 minutes and the Millers snatched a vital winner three minutes from time.
Tilbury played the last third of their match at the Village Glass Stadium against hosts Witham with ten men after Darren Phillips received a straight red in the 58th minute.
At the time they were leading thanks to Tom Anderson’s 28th minute goal and Kris Newby ensured their victory with a sensational second on 67 minutes.
The win lifts Tilbury to ninth, once place above Grays Athletic who succumbed 1-0 at home to Coggeshall. The game’s deciding goal came moments before half time from Michael Gyasi.
