Hospital trust pays out £15,000 after 93-year-old man’s death and protracted legal battle

BASILDON & Thurrock University Hospitals Trust has confirmed it has paid out £15,000 in compensation to the family of a 93-year-old man who died after being injured at Basildon Hospital.

The announcement comes after a three year legal battle, during which the trust had repeatedly denied any responsibility.

However, they have now confirmed an out of court settlement.

Sidney Gold had his right cruciate knee ligament torn when in Basildon Hospital in January 2015.

Mr Gold, from Brentwood, was left in pain for six months and died in June the same year following sepsis and bouts of pneumonia.

A spokesman for the trust said: “Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust can confirm that the settlement of a claim brought by Mr Gold’s family has been agreed between the parties.

“The terms of the settlement are confidential to the parties and it would be inappropriate to comment in any detail.

“We would like to express our sincere sympathy to Mr Gold’s family, the death of a loved one is a cause of great sadness in any circumstance.”
