THE reopening of the State cinema in Grays as a JD Wetherspoons pub appears to be moving closer after the company applied to Thurrock Council for a licence.
Wetherspoons bought the derelict building several years ago and last year were granted planning permission for an extensive renovation, though they did not give a timescale for a reopening.
However, some remedial work has been taking place on the building and it is understood much of the interior fittings have been commissioned and are being created off site for installation.
Wetherspoons are seeking a licence to operate the cinema on George Street for late night refreshment and supply of alcohol for consumption on and off the premises from 8am to midnight Sunday to Wednesday and 8am to 1am Thursday to Saturday.
The application was lodged on 4 January and residents have 28 days to comment before the application will go before Thurrock Council’s licensing committee.
