Students take to the airwaves

STUDENTS at the Thurrock campus of South essex College can now tune in to the college’s own radio station launched by fellow young people .

Jack Burke, Jordan Kennedy and Jake Medland, all Level 3 Broadcast Media students at the College’s Southend Campus, created Icon radio to give students a chance to gain valuable and practical work experience.

Alongside a dedicated team of student hosts and with expert help from Radio Essex advisors, the team have created a station run by students for students. Jack, 18, said: “We wanted to give young people an opportunity to express themselves without boundaries through radio. We’ve created lots of different shows with music and chat to keep things varied for listeners..

“Being in the studio and actually managing the desk is a great way to learn the craft.”
