Rocks brush aside Manor challenge

Ryan Scott

Southend Manor 0, East Thurrock United 5

A THREADBARE Rocks squad of just 12 players still proved far too strong for Essex Senior League Manor as John Coventry’s side moved through to an Essex Senior Cup quarter-final tie at Bowers & Pitsea – where they will come up against several former ETU stalwarts.

East Thurrock sit at the bottom of the Vanarama South table and with a host of players sidelined through injury must have been wary of slipping on a cup banana skin at Southchurch Park but they dominated the game from start to finish.

Indeed they ought to have gone in at half time with a much more commanding lead than the 14th minute strike from Ben Marlow. Ryan Scott, Romain Michael-Percil, most notably when he hit the bar from a few yards, and Freddy Moncur all passed up gilt-edged chances but it was largely one way traffic.

Manor threatened briefly at the start of the second half and keeper Jack Giddens was called into serious action a couple of times but once Scott had powerfully headed a second for Rocks, Manor wilted. Marlow and Scott both got a second goal and the strike of the night came from Michael-Percil.

At the end of the day Rocks won’t get carried away with the result in the wider context of their season but five goals and a clean sheet at least puts them on an upbeat path going into Saturday’s home league derby with Chelmsford City when hopefully some of the injury issues will have been cleared up.
