Hit and run victim dies six months after incident

ONE of the victims of a hit and run crash in East Tilbury has died in hospital, nearly months after the incident that also left her 11-year-old niece in a serious condition.

The 65-year-old woman and the child were hit by the car  in Coronation Avenue on 16 May. Both suffered serious injuries, but the child has been recovering well after returning home.

The identity of both is well-known and has been published many times on social media, where the last 24 hours has seen dozens of tributes posted to the lady. Members of the local community have been tremendously supportive of the family – events to help them have included a local sponsored walk (pictured above).

On June 22 at Basildon Crown Court, Liam Jones-Bell, 25, of Markhams Close, Laindon, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision, aggravated vehicle taking, drink-driving, driving while unfit through drugs, driving without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

He was sentenced to a total of three years and four months in jail and banned from driving for eight years and eight months.

A forensic post mortem examination will take place in due course to determine the woman’s cause of death. Depending on these results, police will then seek guidance from the Crown Prosecution Service as to whether or not further charges are suitable.
