Higgins hits hat-trick as new look Rocks lift spirits

Sam Higgins

East Thurrock United 3, White Ensign 0
AN entertaining Essex Senior Cup tie at Rookery Hall on Tuesday saw East Thurrock through to the fourth round, but perhaps more importantly top scorer Sam Higgins finally found his shooting boots with his first competitive goals from open play this season.
Higgins grabbed all the Rocks goals, the first an exemplary volleyed finish from a fine cross provided by debutant Gorkhan Can on 20 minutes, the second just before half time when he finished off Tom Derry’s cross and the third was a gift following a defensive mix-up 20 minutes from the end.
Some fine saves from Ensign’s keeper kept the score down in the closing stages but Rocks, who also saw first starts for the returning Steve Sheehan, midfielders Reece Prestedge and Frankie Hession-Harris and young defender Jonathan Nzengo will be satisfied with a win and clean sheet as they seek to revitalise themselves after a poor start to the Vanarama South season
