Star energises Flashdance at the Towngate

‘Flashdance The Musical’ opened at Towngate Theatre tonight (Tuesday, 9 October) for four  nights only- leaving audiences up on their feet and ‘dancing for all their lives’!

In the 16th month of their UK tour, the cast of Flashdance have pirouetted their way to Basildon’s stage – starring Strictly Come Dancing Champion Joanne Clifton. Full of passion and vivacity, this musical is based on the 1983 film featuring Jennifer Beals- following the captivating story of dance-obsessed 18 year-old Alex Owens: welder by day, flash dancer by night.

As she dreams of a life dancing professionally at the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy- Alex is faced with obstacles in her love life, friendships and career- holding onto her ambition for performing all the while.

Jennifer Clifton’s enthusiasm and energy shines through in this role, supported by a brilliant ensemble of strong, lively performers. With songs full of energy including the iconic songs ‘Maniac’, ‘Gloria’ and ‘I Love Rock and Roll’, Flashdance is jam-packed with a variety of ambitious numbers. Of course any musical isn’t complete without an electric love story, Alex’s boss Nick Hurley played by the exceptionally talented Colin Kiyani; the pair captivate audiences with powerful voices and immense dancing ability!

Bright lights, incredible set, comedy and a lot of leg warmers- this production captures the entertainment and originality of the 80s pop era, as well as the universality of Alex’s character: a young person full of ambition and dream. Complete with an incredible live band and bold choreography, the entire team work together showing their love and commitment to both this musical, and the whole performing arts industry.

So grab your leather jackets, microphones and hairspray- you’ll be in for lots of fun!
