Friends are in the pink for Sharon

Happy times: Emma, Sarah and Sharon were friends from childhood.

A?COUPLE of Thurrock friends will be having a ball later this month to honour the memory of a tragic borough woman, and raise cash for a cancer charity.
Emma Mulcahy and Sarah Keeling from Grays have organised a ‘Pink Ball’ at the Civic Hall in?Blackshots on Saturday, 27 January and have sold out the 320- seat event already.
They were motivated by the loss of their childhood friend Sharon Hodgson (nee Allkins) who died in June 2016.
Sharon left behind two young daughters and had been friends with Emma and Sarah for more than 20 years after they met at Woodside and Torells school.
Emma and Sarah ran the London Marathon for Breast Cancer Now in April 2017 and after hosting a number of other fundraising events, have raised more than £14,000 for the charity, which will pay for over 560 hours of research.
Now the dynamic duo are hoping to raise more than £5,000 for the charity’s life-saving research. They are asking local businesses to donate raffle prizes to help make the event an even bigger success.
Emma, from St George’s Avenue said: “We’re really looking forward to hosting the Pink Ball and we hope to raise lots of money for this very worthy cause, which is so close to our hearts.
“Thanks to incredible research developments, more women are surviving breast cancer than ever before, but around 1,000 women still die from the disease every month in the UK.
“We really hope that with this event we can help Breast Cancer Now get closer to their aim that by 2050, everyone who is diagnosed with breast cancer will live. We want everybody in Thurrock to join us and fundraise for Breast Cancer Now’s vital research, to help stop women dying of breast cancer in the future.”
Catherine Davies, Community Fundraising Manager at Breast Cancer Now, said: “We are so grateful for Emma and Sarah’s wonderful support. We hope their ball will be a big success while raising much-needed funds for breast cancer research.
“With every cake we bake and bucket we shake, we’re powering research that’s finding new ways to prevent, detect and treat breast cancer, until the day when we stop it once and for all.
“And with supporters like Emma and Sarah by our side, we can make it happen faster. We wish them the very best with their event!
“Every action, big or small, gets us a step closer. Find out how you can help at breastcancernow.org/get-involved.”
