Experience is key

YEAR 10 students at Thurrock’s Gateway Academy recently completed a day of mock interviews, delivered by industry professionals from across the borough.
Students arrived at their interview dressed to impress with CVs and letters of application ready to find out what a real interview feels like.
Some were more nervous than others but most felt that it wasn’t quite as bad as they thought it was going to be!
With almost a quarter of the year group being identified as ‘outstanding’ at interview, the interviewers fed back to the school with various comments such as: “Very pleasant and polite students – a credit to the school”, “A really refreshing day – the young people were wonderful and ambitious” to “I get a good vibe from the school and feel it is professional in delivery and personable to us as guests”.
Just as important was the feedback from the students themselves, exemplified by the comments: “My confidence has gone sky-high” and “It wasn’t as bad as I expected”.

Richard Heighway (left), Vice Principal at Gateway, said: “We would like to thank everyone who gave their time to make the Mock Interview day such a great success.
“Hearing the response from both the interviewers and the students emphasised the importance of this experience.
“This will stand them in good stead when they attend their Work Experience interviews, before commencing their placements on 26 June for two weeks.
“Work experience is a valued part of the curriculum at the Gateway Academy and benefits the students greatly.
“If there are any businesses that could offer a placement to an eager Year 10 student, please get in touch with the school. All placements are very much appreciated!”
